Gold

Summary

Gold will be based on The Perfect Distance, an account of the Sebastian Coe-Steve Ovett rivalry written by the journalist, Pat Butcher. It will focus on the build-up to the 1980 Olympics, where Coe took the first of his two gold medals in the 1,500m and Ovett won gold in the 800m. Ovett’s dramatic defeat in the final of the 1,500m was the first time that the Englishman had lost in 3 years and 45 races.

After retiring from athletics in 1990, Sebastian Coe entered politics, serving as a Conservative MP from 1992 to 1997. In 2005, he was the chairman of the bid to bring the Olympic Games to London and he is currently a vice-chairman of the International Association of Athletics Federations.
