From the author of Edgar Award finalist Grit and The Lies They Tell comes a tense, atmospheric novel for fans of E. Lockhart and Marieke Nijkamp, about friendship, truth, and the creeping fears that can’t be outrun.
Whenever another kid goes missing in October, the kids in the old factory town of Pender know what is really behind it: a monster out in the marshes that they call the Mumbler.
That’s what Clara’s new crew tells her when she moves to town. Bree and Sage, who take her under their wing. Spirited Trace, who has taken the lead on this year’s Halloween prank war. And magnetic Kincaid, whose devil-may-care attitude and air of mystery are impossible for Clara to resist.
Clara doesn’t actually believe in the Mumbler–not like Kinkaid does. But as Halloween gets closer and tensions build in the town, it’s hard to shake the feeling that there really is something dark and dangerous in Pender. Lurking in the shadows. Waiting to bring the stories to life. Excerpt:“It’s sad, you coming here.” Kincaid takes me in, his smile fading. “Now you’ve got no chance.”
No chance. Like he read it in my tea leaves or the lines of my palm. “Why?”
“Because he only takes Pender kids. Likes our taste, I guess.” Kincaid drops his board, glides backward on one foot, never breaking eye contact. “Like . . . hopelessness.”
“And Steak-umms from the caf,” somebody says, making people snicker.
“Liver.” Trace shows his teeth. “God, I love that shit.”
“What about Gavin Cotswold?” Sage says. “Have they figured out how he died yet?”
“Mumbler got him.” Trace.
“He OD’d.” Bree gives Trace a withering look. “He went out in the woods, got fucked up, and died. His own mom thinks so.”
“I heard the animals didn’t leave enough of him behind to be sure.” Trace says. Then, to Kincaid, “Tell her about the first boy. Ricky Whoever.”
“Sartain. Ricky Sartain.” Behind Kincaid, most of the activity has stopped, everybody pulling up some concrete to listen. He’s holding court, a storyteller who knows his audience. “It all started, like, twenty years ago. Kid went missing two days before they found him on the banks of the marsh, way out by the railroad bridge.” Kincaid nods slowly, easing into it. “Somebody put their hands all over him.”
More covert laughter, Trace’s whisper: “Loved to death.”
Kincaid entwines his fingers, working his palms together in sinuous rhythm. “Squeezed him, crushed him. Mashed his spine, smashed his belly.”
A voice speaks up: “My mom said that kid got hit by the train.”
“Of course she did.” Kincaid doesn’t turn. “She also told you that Santa Claus is real and honesty is the best policy and if you’re good, you’ll get into heaven, right?”
Snorts. Somebody mimics, “But my mommy said,” whacking the boy who interrupted with a baseball cap.
“He was folded in half.” Sage grips Trace’s forearm. “That’s what I heard.”
“No.” Kincaid’s hands are tai chi slow. “Lengthwise.”
“Stop.” Bree says it under her breath; I’m the only one who hears.
“Ricky disappeared right around Halloween. That’s the pattern.” Kincaid skates a circuit around us, dismounts, and slaps the tail of the board so it pops into his hand again, all one smooth movement that I wish I could watch again frame by frame. “Truth. After, Ricky’s friends told everybody how they’d all gone out to the railroad bridge to smash pumpkins one night, and there was somebody hiding under there. Too dark to see, but they heard him, mumbling and yammering away.”
Yip, yip, yip! I look up to see audience participation, lumbering shapes aping around the others, sounding like a zoo after hours—Ahhh-ah-ah-ah! Mwaaa-hoohoo!
“Next time anybody saw Ricky, he was red guacamole.” Kincaid pauses, smiling faintly, but he’s not really seeing me now. “Ever since, Mumbler’s been around. Takes a bad kid every few years, always in October. Grown-ups have some bullshit excuse for what happened to them, but we know.”
Nods pass around the circle. I watch for inside looks—they’ll drop the act when they see I’m not taken in—but the quiet drags on. “What’s the Mumbler look like?” I hold Kincaid’s gaze, willing him to let me in on this, let me prove I don’t scare easy. “So I’ll know him if I see him.”
Kincaid looks to Trace, again with the smile that creases his eyes into merry slits, a kid showing his little sister where Mom hides the Christmas presents. “We can take you to him.”

Two immortal realms on brink of war. One
mortal standing in their way.
With the quint squaring off against the king of Slait, Lera is running out of
time to tame her feral magic. Worse still, just when the quint must weave
together to survive, demons from Tye’s past surface to tear them apart. Demons
he fears facing, let alone sharing with Lera.
But when Griorgi makes a move that no one expects, throwing River, Shade, and
Coal’s lives into question, the clock runs out. Lera and Tye have no choice but
to fight their battles within—or risk losing Lunos and their quint forever.
LERA OF LUNOS is a full-length reverse-harem fantasy novel, the stunning
finale to the Amazon-bestselling, KU-All Star POWER OF FIVE series.
Four cords of power. Three trials. Two soul-crushing secrets.
For Lera, training has never been so
hard. With the males’ power roaring in her veins and River’s cold demand that she master the magic before the third trial, something has to give. Worse still, River is keeping something from her. Something about his past and
For River and Coal, the past must stay
buried. Though one male’s nightmare sits on a throne and the other’s hides in his soul, they are equally unprepared for Lera’s startling determination to undress the truth.
But when Mors’s Emperor Jawrar makes a

TRIAL OF THREE is a full-length
reverse-harem fantasy novel, third in the Amazon bestselling, KU-All Star POWER OF FIVE series.
Three trials stand between Lera and exile. Unless the training
kills her first.
Quint magic has never chosen a human before, and the Elders Council is
convinced Lera is a mistake.
When the quint refuses to be cleaved apart, the enraged elders give them a choice: exile from Lunos or demotion to the lowest of trainees. Subject again to the humiliations and deadly trials they endured centuries ago, the males now face a new challenge—training Lera to survive.
River, Shade, Coal, and Tye will do whatever it takes to keep Lera safe. But Lera will do whatever she must to keep them together—even if it means putting herself in mortal danger.
Four elite fae warriors. One mortal female. A magical bond they can’t allow—or resist.
Orphaned and sold to a harsh master, Lera’s life is about mucking stalls, avoiding her master’s advances, and steering clear of the mystical forest separating the mortal and fae worlds. Only fools venture into the immortal realms, and only dark rumors come out… Until four powerful fae warriors appear at Lera’s barn.
River, Coal, Tye, and Shade have waited a decade for their new fifth to be chosen, the wounds from their quint brother’s loss still raw. But the magic has played a cruel trick, bonding the four immortal warriors to… a female. A mortal female.
Distractingly beautiful and dangerously frail, Lera can only be one thing—a mistake. Yet as the males bring Lera back to the fae lands to sever the bond, they discover that she holds more power over their souls than is safe for anyone… especially for Lera herself.
Power of Five is a full-length reverse-harem fantasy novel.
“There was rather little incentive to follow the rules at that point,” Tye said simply. “And smuggling pays well.” He swallowed painfully, unable to look at her for this part, to see in her eyes the moment she realized he’d been right to push her away. “Now do you see why I thought you should go with Shade? If it were up to me, Lilac Girl, I would never let you out of my sight for the rest of my life. But it
isn’t up to me, especially now that you know the full truth. You deserve better, Lera. You deserve the world.”
Silence trailed at the heels of Tye’s words, the cave around them a capsule of secrets. Each memory shoving itself insistently from its hiding place in the depths of Tye’s mind drove another needle into his soul. Fingers tightening on the rough stone, Tye inhaled the damp, mossy air and awaited judgment.
Several heartbeats passed before Lera rose to her knees, her cool hands gripping Tye’s face. Tipping it to look so deeply into his eyes that Tye felt his soul bared beneath her intense chocolate gaze. Stars, if the girl could make him feel so vulnerable with one look, what could she do with a word? A step? Fear crackled along his veins, but when he tried to pull back, to escape for a bit of air, Lera would
not let him.
“I see you, Tye.” Her words
rang gently through the cave, stopping Tye’s heart. “And I want you. Not for
play. I want you for you, forever.”
Tye’s blood stirred, waking
him to Lera’s words. She wanted him.
She wanted him.
The way he’d always longed
for her but had been so certain she would never feel in return. He stared into
her eyes, hardly daring to believe it.
“And I want forever to start
now, Tye,” she said quietly.

Prologue: 10 years ago
– Jack –
“Wake up, Jack. We’re moving out. Your
assignment is done.”
My commanding officer barks his orders
out, jolting me awake. I open my eyes and try to focus as the dawn barely
lights the room around me.
“What do you mean, done? Last night we
were waiting on the search warrants. We had the whole family. It was going
down… today.” Propping myself up on my elbows, I shake my head, trying to
will myself to catch up.
Going over the last few days in my head,
this doesn’t make sense. I’ve been on the ground with my unit for months now
working special ops undercover with local law enforcement on a federal level,
collecting whatever evidence we could and rounding up witnesses. Everything
finally began to snowball together three days ago.
First one witness came forward, then a
second, then the third came in with solid proof. With Port Thomas being a
smaller city nestled near the coast in Oregon, law enforcement is always
underfunded so they were thankful for the additional manpower, as long as we didn’t
step on too many toes.
We had our mission in place for today,
but this wasn’t how it was supposed to go.
“It blew up. Shit went down a few hours
ago. Apparently, they knew we were coming. The Sparr family is gone. All of the
evidence against them is now speculative. Four witnesses are dead. Another two
are missing.” Then, as he opens his mouth, I see the hesitation in his eyes as
his body physically braces for a fight.
“Jack.” My commander starts then stops,
carefully considering his words with a frustrating pause. “It’s Jessa. Both her
and her brother’s bodies are missing.”
“What do you mean, missing?” Then the
weight of his words hits me. “Wait. What do you mean, bodies?” I bolt out of
bed onto shaky legs as I feel my world begin to crumble piece by piece.
He chose his words carefully. She isn’t
Her body is missing.
“Her family was in a car accident just
outside of town at the bridge. It looks like they went over the cliff. Her
parents’ bodies were recovered from the ravine along with the car. We don’t
know yet if it’s related but three other people from the company are dead as
well. It was a quick job.” He glances around my area as I feel panic begin to
flow through my veins.
“Maybe Jessa and Travis weren’t in the
car. Did you check their house?” I counter in a desperate attempt to think of
something they haven’t yet.
Thoughts quickly come to me. I just saw
both Jessa and Travis yesterday. We were all talking about how fast our high
school grad is coming up in a few months. For siblings, they are almost
inseparable. Twins who look nothing alike but finished each others sentences at
When I started this undercover op, six
months ago, I never expected to meet someone like Jessa. I was just a kid
myself at 23 and I was five years older than her and her brother. But I fit
into their senior year in high school. No one knew my secret.
Everything about Jessa just fit for me.
And now they are both missing.
“We’ve been to the house and the
hospital. We retrieved the car an hour ago. The back side window was broken out
from the inside. We found her school bag in the back seat. And before you ask,
we already have over half the team in on the search. We’ve been working with
the local guys and they have all of her information. We’re checking the river
banks as well as the water. Anyone making it out will be found, unless…” His
voice trails off in realization that he said too much, but I pick up where he
“Unless they got pulled under and sucked
down the rapids.” I feel my empty stomach clench tight.
His eyes stay locked on me as I pause to
gather my thoughts then, without pretense, my body involuntarily spins to get
dressed and go after Jessa and that’s when I notice them.
Two men standing behind my commanding
“Look, Jack. We know you and Jessa
became close but you need to let the team handle it. Finding her and her
brother is their priority while we’re still here. Our mission still stands
though and your orders are to pack up and let them do their job.” His attempt
at pacifying me is beginning to speak to a part of me that I don’t want to show
as the way he trivializes my feelings for her ignites my fight or flight
We didn’t become close.
She was it.
She was everything.
She was mine and after the arrests were
made, I was coming for her. I was going to come clean about everything. I was
going to tell her I was undercover and older than she thought I was. I was
going to ask her to forgive my secrets and I was going to tell her I loved her.
Now she’s gone.

For Mary Sofia, The Penultimate writing competition is more than a chance at a free college education; she wants to show her younger siblings that they can all rise above their violent family history. For Raiden, the pressure to succeed comes from within, although he knows that family traditions play a part in his
determination. For Camara, writing fiction is almost compulsive, but her own
dark secret may be the best story she can ever tell. For Michael, swimming and
writing fit his introverted personality perfectly, but meeting a smart and
beautiful girl at The Penultimate makes stepping outside of his comfort zone
easy. All four will compete against each other along with 96 other high school juniors for the chance of a lifetime: a full scholarship to a prestigious private college. Some students will do anything to win, but others may pay the price.
The second YA title from award-winning, best selling author Cecily Wolfe tells the story of four teens with friendships in the making and futures in the balance – but who will win The Penultimate?

One woman on the run. Four dangerously sexy bodyguards. And a war brewing that will change the shifter world forever…
I’m living on borrowed time, fighting
for survival against a deadly new virus that has no cure and a cult doing its best to brainwash me. But when a mysterious note shows up on my windowsill one night, its chilling message–Run, Wren–launches me out of the frying pan and
into the fire.
Within hours, everything I thought I knew about my life, my family, and my origins is obliterated, and I’m racking up enemies at an alarming rate. Between the cult I’ve just escaped, a violent shifter faction out for my blood, and an ancient evil who eats “chosen ones” like me for breakfast, my last hope is to join forces with four dangerous-looking men who claim they were sent to guard my life.
Luke, a werewolf with a rap sheet. Creedence, a lynx shifter who never met a mark he couldn’t con. Kite, a bear kin with a mean right hook and heart of gold. And Dust, my childhood best friend and dude voted least likely to be a secret shape-shifting griffin.
But are these men really what they seem?
Or are my alpha guardians hiding a secret agenda of their own?
I’m not sure, but one thing is for certain—choosing the right allies will mean the difference between life and death. For me, and everyone I love.
UNLEASHED is book one in the Dark Moon Shifter’s series. It is a true reverse
harem featuring one woman and her four mates.
Kite’s breath rushes out, his shoulders sagging with a relief that makes me feel like I’ve done something more important than answer a question. “Good. Keep trusting me, bird girl, and I’m going to show you a whole new world. A world where you can be the powerhouse you are on the inside.”
The backs of my eyes begin to sting, but I’m smiling when I say, “There’s no cure, Kite. I might never go back into remission, let alone get better.”
He pauses, seeming to debate something silently before he whispers, “But then again, you might.” Before I can assure him that hope is a lost cause in this case, he leans down and gently presses his lips to mine and I am the one who’s lost.
My eyes slide closed as my heart lights up, each warm, sweet brush of his lips against mine making my body fill with magic. Electricity floods my nerve endings and my pulse races so fast I know I would fall over if Kite let me go. But he doesn’t let me go, he wraps me up in his big strong arms, hugging me close as he lifts me off my feet, bringing our lips onto a level playing field as he takes charge of holding us both steady.
With a soft sob of gratitude for this kiss, this miracle, this moment of feeling like the luckiest girl in Seattle, I wrap my arms around his neck and kiss him with everything in me, not caring if I use up all the energy I’ll need to get home.
I’m always so careful—I’ve had to be in order to keep working and having some semblance of a normal life long after most people with my condition would have taken to their beds for good—but I don’t want to be careful right now. I want to be alive and wanted and on fire. I want to burn with this man who makes me hungry in a way I’ve never experienced before.
In just a few moments, Kite banishes every teenage kiss and lukewarm make-out session from my early twenties from my memory, leaving nothing but his smoky, sexy taste in my mouth and his campfire and almond scent swirling through my head.

About the Book:
Title: LIKE NEVER AND ALWAYS Author: Ann Aguirre Pub. Date: July 17, 2018 Publisher: Tor Teen Formats: Hardcover, eBook, audiobook Pages: 336
On a hot summer night, a screech of brakes and shattering glass changes two lives forever.
Liv wakes in the hospital, confused when they call her Morgan. She assumes it’s
a case of mistaken identity, yet when the bandages come off, it’s not her face
in the mirror anymore. It’s her best friend Morgan’s.
Morgan always seemed to have the perfect life, yet Liv must navigate endlessly disturbing secrets of the criminal and murderous variety—and a romance that feels like a betrayal. Torn between the boy she loved as Liv and the boy she’s grown to love as Morgan, Liv still has to survive Morgan’s last request.
“Just let this be the second secret you keep for me,” I say then. “Thanks for not telling Nathan, by the way.”
Clay leans his arm along the door frame, tilting his head slightly out the open window as if he needs the air. “You couldn’t pay me to talk to that jackass lately.”
“You two fighting?”
“No. He’s just . . . Nathan.” He hesitates. “I wasn’t going to tell you this . . .”
“What?” Anything that could divert me from my precarious situation, even momentarily, seems like a welcome distraction.
“He brought a girl home last night.” From his tone he expects this to destroy me.
And sure, there’s a twinge because before, I thought Nathan and I had a soul-deep connection. Fact is, he’s a little immature, a lot selfish, and I just never noticed. They say love is blind, but I’d say that infatuation is blind, and love is tolerant. When you really love someone, it’s not that you can’t see the flaws; you’re just willing to forgive them.
Belatedly I realize he’s expecting a reply. “I’m not surprised. Nathan is used to getting what he wants just like you’re using to giving things up. Oh, I was going to ask him to drop this off, but since you’re here . . .” I fish in my backpack for his hoodie.
Yes, I’ve been carrying it for like four days. First I hesitated to wash it, but I didn’t want to be a sad girl who’s still smelling her ex’s clothes a month later. Then I didn’t return it because that felt like final acceptance, —superstitious, I know. Over is over, and random articles of clothing don’t change anything.
“You didn’t need to bother with that. I’ve had it forever.”
“All the more reason for you to have it back,” I say.
“Do you need to be this cool about everything?” he bursts out. “I know you have to be scared and hurt—”
“Yeah, I am, all those things. And yes, I have to be this way, or I can’t function. Why are you even here anyway?” The pain and frustration cracks my voice, and I really wish I was anywhere else.
“Because I’m worried about you.”
“Then stop. I accepted your decision, now respect mine. It’ll be easier if I don’t have to see you.”
His jaw clenches, showing the force he’s exerting to bite back whatever he wants to say.
Finally he just takes his hoodie but he pauses with his hand on the door. “You know you can call me, right? Even if we’re not together, I’d never let anyone hurt you. One call and I’m there.”
My heart feels like it’ll crack in two, but I’m resolute; I have to be. “I already deleted your number.”
