Entertainment Weekly Interview
Marcie / Jan 29th, 2020

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: When you signed on to the first season of Miracle Workers, there was always the plan to make it an anthology series. How did Simon decide on this Dark Ages setting and story line?
DANIEL RADCLIFFE: Simon is somebody who is a bit of a history nerd, and Simon’s brain looked at a lot of the potential situations in that world and just saw something he could make very, very funny. There is some stuff in the show that is really obviously heightened, that is very crazy, but it’s not that far off from the kind of stuff that was going on in medieval Europe. We have a goat on trial, and that is actually something that is completely true and something that happened with semi-regularity in medieval Europe. There really were animals put on trial for things, so it’s quite rich pickings for comedy.

The first season played with our common perceptions of the afterlife and God, and this is certainly a different take on the Middle Ages than we’re used to seeing — less Game of Thrones, more medieval sitcom. What do you most enjoy about the expectations or world this is subverting?
As you say, it complicates people’s notions of what these archetypes of certain characters would be, and Simon finds the means to subvert them. My character, for instance, is essentially a stupid prince in the way you might expect one to exist, but then we gradually watch him become more human as the series goes on. With how beautiful the sets are and how well lit it is, it has the look of Game of Thrones, but the jokes and the format of The Simpsons.

It’s so fun to see this repertory company of actors shaking things up, taking on very different roles from season 1. Did you draw straws for them? How did that all shake out?
No, not at all. My one request, or the thing I was most excited about, was that we would actually all be on set together for this series, because certain structural things in the first [season] — I never had scenes with Jon Bass, for example, because he was on earth and I was in heaven. I was very excited to actually have the cast all combined for this series this time around, and get to do stuff with them. It was me, Steve, and Geraldine’s characters that I remember Simon talking about first. The joy of working with somebody like Simon is that I don’t know if there’s anybody else that I know well enough that I could just trust and be like, “Whatever you write for the next few years, I will be happy to perform.” I am in such awe of his ability. I’ve been in the writers’ room with him and watched him be forensic and amazing about a story in a way that I have admiration for. I feel very safe in his hands. I would pretty much do whatever he writes — I have to be careful saying that.

Your character has… I guess we could call it an affinity for ducks. What is one surprising thing you learned from working with live ducks?
[Laughs] It’s unfortunate to say that the one thing I learned about them is that they smell worse than you’d expect, but there was a lot of duck s— happening when you’ve got multiple ducks on set, and it is a very distinctive smell. Karan Soni will confirm that once you’ve smelt it, it’s a smell you can identify anywhere, and as soon as they’re around you’re like, “Oh, the ducks are here.” They’re quite hard to train. Originally it was going to be geese, and they were like, “No, geese are a nightmare. That’s not going to happen.” We had three ducks that were the main ducks — they were called in British film terminology the hero ducks — and they would be brought to set. They were very good. You would set them in a certain spot and they would kind of do what they were told, and then you would get the other ducks on set and it’d be like, “Okay, let’s see what happens.”

It sounds like a bit of a clusterduck.
[Laughs] Yes, you could say that. I can’t believe I never thought of that in 10 weeks of filming!

How would you describe Chauncley, and in particular his relationship with his father? What journey can we expect this season?
At the beginning, Chauncley is intensely lonely and psychotically stupid. He’s an individual who has no empathy or self-awareness whatsoever, and the journey throughout — he meets Alexandra, Geraldine’s character, and she begins to open him up to a new world and between her and Karan, he gradually learns he does not have to follow in his tyrannical father’s footsteps. [She] helps him become more human and nice toward the end.

You and Geraldine have an easy rapport and natural chemistry. Is that story one of friendship or her making you more politically aware?
That friendship grows and maybe blossoms into something else, but Chauncley’s obviously not very good at that. He doesn’t really know what to do with these new feelings. But it is also about her just making him realize that there is life outside of the castle, and there is life outside of the line of murderous tyrants that he comes from. He does not necessarily have to follow in their footsteps. I would say that she learns stuff from me, but I don’t think she does — I think I just kind of help out at key moments, but it’s very rare that I’m speaking out as a character. Chauncley does not have a lot of speeches, bless him.

This is the first project you’ve done since Harry Potter where you got to have that experience of coming back together as a group to tell a story with deepened relationships and familiarity with one other — but now with the added element of taking on a new set of characters. If you had the luxury of doing that on Potter, which character would you have wanted to jump into?
Oh God, I guess Lupin and Sirius Black are both incredibly cool characters. Though I have to say, it’s also [because] I probably am biased a little because I love both the actors [David Thewlis and Gary Oldman] that played them. But yeah, I’d probably have to say one of those two.

You’ve been in rehearsals for Endgame on the West End, and I saw Alan Cumming’s photo with your director’s notes saying, “Actors fried.” You’ve done classic musical theater, Martin McDonagh, Peter Shaffer. Where does Beckett rank in difficulty level for you, in terms of language and approach?
Right up there at the very top. It’s tough, and I’m so glad I’m subjected to it with Alan and with [director] Richard Jones. It’s an amazing team that I’m getting to work with. It’s really tricky material, and it requires a lot of precision. Hopefully, it will come out right. But you’re definitely talking to me at a period of rehearsals where I’m like, “Oh my God.” It really is the hardest thing I’ve done.

Prince Chauncley is a bit more song-and-dance than warmonger. Do you want to do another musical, and if so do you have one in particular you want to do?
I would love to do another musical, but you have to genuinely commit for a long time. That’s not the case with plays, normally. You generally have to commit for a lot longer, and then you have to really love it. You have to absolutely know going in. You have to love doing that show, and be able to love it for a year. So I definitely want to do a musical again, but I’m not going to do it until I’m sure of that.

Synopsis

Nothing stirs outside. In a bare room, Hamm, old and blind, is locked in a stalemate with his servant Clov. Interrupted only by the nostalgic musings of Hamm’s ancient, dustbin-dwelling parents, this bleakly funny double act cling stubbornly to their routine of casual savagery and mutual dependence.

Endgame will be presented in a double bill with Beckett’s rarely seen short play Rough for Theatre II, in which two men discuss the fate of the other man in the room, who never speaks. This will be performed by members of the company.

On Tuesday, Checkology® students at two NYC schools saw The Lifespan of A Fact — followed by a talkback, moderated by NLP founder and CEO Alan Miller (left), with director Leigh Silverman and actors Bobby Cannavale, Daniel Radcliffe and Cherry Jones. The topic: “true” versus “true-ish.”

The 30-minute Q&A covered a number of topics, such as the importance of the arts and the ability to enjoy a movie “based on a true story” without looking up every fact upon leaving the theater. The actors also had a strong message for the students, describing how their roles in the play had strengthened their respect for journalism and for real-life fact-checkers. In fact, in preparation for this part, Radcliffe shadowed a fact-checker at The New Yorker.

“It gave me incredible faith,” Radcliffe said, noting that he was “inspired” by the “people out there who are doing this job and doing it amazingly rigorously.”

Theater Gone Wrong
Marcie / Nov 23rd, 2018

Daniel Radcliffe made his Broadway musical debut as J. Pierrepont Finch in the 2011 revival of the Frank Loesser musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. In the show, Radcliffe’s character is a window washer who climbs the corporate ladder with the aid of a self-help book and not much else. In this edition of our Theater Gone Wrong series, Radcliffe remembers the antics of one overzealous How to Succeed… ensemble member who managed to fail at his musical theater entrance by trying a little too hard.

The Lifespan of a Fact’ extends invite to President Trump — as a teaching moment
Marcie / Nov 20th, 2018

The producers of Daniel Radcliffe’s Broadway show about truth in journalism are extending a formal invite to President Trump and the First Lady — as a teaching moment.

“While we respect how you like to challenge facts, to create ‘alternative facts,’ we invite you to spend ninety minutes with us and face this hot button issue head on, in the dark, in a theater, of all places,” reads the invite from producers Jeffrey Richards, Deanna Twain and Will Trice.

The producers also suggested that Trump might learn how to better spot “fake news” about himself after seeing the show. They appealed to Trump’s history as a Broadway player to make their invite more alluring. In 1970, Trump, then 23, invested in the comedy “Paris is Out!” which fizzled out after fewer than 100 performances.

Daniel Radcliffe, Cherry Jones & Bobby Cannavale Reveal The Lifespan of a Fact on Broadway
Marcie / Oct 20th, 2018

The star-packed world premiere staging of The Lifespan of a Fact opens at Studio 54 on October 18. Tony nominee Leigh Silverman directs the Broadway production, which began previews on September 20. The three-person cast includes Daniel Radcliffe, two-time Tony winner Cherry Jones and two-time Tony nominee Bobby Cannavale.

Written by Jeremy Kareken, David Murrell and Gordon Farrell, The Lifespan of a Fact follows Jim Fingal (Radcliffe), who has a small job: to fact-check articles for one of the best magazines in the country. His boss (Jones) has given him a big assignment: to apply his skill to a groundbreaking piece by legendary author John D’Agata (Cannavale). But now Fingal has a huge problem: D’Agata made up a lot of his article. What starts professional quickly becomes profane.

In celebration of opening night, Broadway.com Resident Artist Justin “Squigs” Robertson sketched a portrait of the play’s trio of stars introducing a powerful new work to Broadway crowds.

Every now and then, the football-loving folks of the world get confirmation that a celebrity loves football just like they do. Because celebrities are people, too — even the guy who played “Harry Potter” in all eight of those movies.

That guy’s name is Daniel Radcliffe, and on Thursday morning he did an interview on the MSNBC program “Morning Joe.” He was there to talk about his new play, but host Joe Scarborough couldn’t resist getting a little football talk in first. It turns out that Radcliffe, who is from London, is actually crazy about American football. He likes it so much that he even has two fantasy football teams, one in a league that he runs himself.

The cast is comprised of Bobby Cannavale, Cherry Jones, and Daniel Radcliffe, and is based on the true events surrounding John D’Agata’s essay “What Happens There” about the suicide of teenager Levi Presley. The play explores the quandary of what passes for truth in literary nonfiction, and features Cannavale as the writer D’Agata, Radcliffe as determined young fact-checker John Fingal, and Jones as his demanding boss Emily Penrose.

The creative team includes Mimi Lien (set design), Linda Cho (costume design), and Jennifer Schriever (lighting design).

Daniel Radcliffe and the Art of the Fact-Check
Marcie / Oct 13th, 2018

Fact: the actor Daniel Radcliffe is currently starring in the Broadway show “The Lifespan of a Fact,” as a magazine fact checker with an aviation inspector’s zeal for accuracy. The play is drawn from a real-life skirmish: in 2005, Jim Fingal, an intern at The Believer, was tasked with fact-checking an essay by John D’Agata (played by Bobby Cannavale), about a teen suicide in Las Vegas. D’Agata had more of a watercolorist’s approach to the truth. When Fingal tried to correct his claim that Las Vegas had thirty-four licensed strip clubs—a source indicated that it was thirty-one—D’Agata said that he liked the “rhythm” of thirty-four. Their epistolary tussle was expanded into a book in 2012.

Not long ago, Radcliffe arrived at the offices of this magazine, wearing a maroon cap and a green jacket and clutching a latte. He had come to try his own hand at fact-checking, with the help of The New Yorker’s fact-checking department. Radcliffe had a few things to verify himself. Passing a wall displaying recent New Yorker covers, he said, “That makes me feel a lot better about our play. We’ve talked about whether an editor would have loads of covers in their office. I’m going to go back and say, ‘Yes.’ ”

He reported to the office of Peter Canby, the magazine’s head of fact-checking. “One of the flaws—maybe it isn’t a flaw—that my character has in the play is that he has no ability to differentiate between the things that matter and the things that don’t,” Radcliffe said. Canby, who had seen a preview, assured him that his character was spot-on, while allowing, “It’s not really a science. It’s more of an art.”

Then he put Radcliffe to work. They hunched over a soon-to-run review of Oxomoco, a Mexican restaurant in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The first step, Canby explained, was to underline all checkable facts. “Let’s crack on,” Radcliffe said, scanning the line “The dip itself was excellent, laced with chilies in adobo and cilantro and dressed up with cotija cheese and slightly smoky, lightly charred cherry tomatoes.” He underlined everything except “was excellent.”

Director Leigh Silverman Makes Theatrical History With Broadway’s The Lifespan of a Fact
Marcie / Oct 7th, 2018

Can you accidentally make history? In the case of director Leigh Silverman—the first to assemble an all-female design team on Broadway—it’s a case of accidentally, on purpose, for The Lifespan of a Fact, currently running at Studio 54 with an official opening scheduled for October 18.

“I had no idea that it had never happened before,” says the Tony-nominated director of her latest project, the world premiere of Jeremy Kareken, David Murrell, and Gordon Farrell’s play. Inspired by real events, the play sees an author (Bobby Cannavale), his editor (Cherry Jones), and a fact checker (Daniel Radcliffe) locked in a debate about the nature of truth in literary nonfiction.

The Lifespan of a Fact documents the seven-year journey from pitch to publication of John D’Agata’s essay, “What Happens There,” about the suicide culture of Las Vegas. The collaboration of three writers—Jeremy Kareken, David Murrell and Gordon Farrell—the new Broadway play is based on the acclaimed 2012 book of the same name by two writers—D’Agata and Jim Fingal, the fact checker who challenged the truthfulness of D’Agata’s reportage. Harry Potter icon Daniel Radcliffe, who has won five Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards for his New York stage work, plays Fingal, with two-time Emmy Award winner and two-time Tony Award nominee Bobby Cannavale playing D’Agata and two-time Tony winner Cherry Jones rounding out the cast as Emily, the editor who fights to keep the project moving along. With these three super-talents, The Lifespan of a Factis sure to be a gotta-see theater event, and there’s nothing fake about that news.

Let me first say, I’m just so excited to see the three of you in a show together. Are you fans of each other’s work?

Bobby Cannavale: Yes, totally.

Cherry Jones: Are you kidding me? Just look at them.

Bobby: I was changing my shirt yesterday, and Cherry came in and said, ‘I missed it! Can you do it again?’ So, yeah, we love each other.

Cherry: Yeah, yeah. And then I said, “Even I, a postmenopausal lesbian…”

Bobby: And I went, “You’re a lesbian?!” [Laughs.] We’ve known each other for a very long time.

Cherry: But never got to work together.

Bobby: I saw Cherry blow my mind years ago.

Cherry: Fact or fiction?

Bobby: Fact! Fact. 1991. First time I saw Cherry onstage. Pretty amazing. And then, you know, Dan’s f**king incredible.

Daniel Radcliffe: I got a couple of emails from these guys just before we started. Cherry emailed us both and Bobby replied. I was like, “Oh, these guys are delightful. This is gonna be a really fun play.” I was already excited about doing it, but then when you can tell you’re working with really good people? That was very exciting.

Bobby: Thank God because there’s only three of us!

Cherry: I was just gonna say that! It’s like the Musketeers. We are interdependent, like one organism, in this thing.

StageThe Lifespan of a Fact
UI nonfiction director’s book spins into Broadway play
Marcie / Sep 18th, 2018

When “The Lifespan of a Fact” opens Thursday for its Broadway previews, John D’Agata of Iowa City will be there.

He’ll attend several more performances as the play moves to its official opening Oct. 18 for a 16-week run at Manhattan’s Studio 54.

Why his interest? He wrote the book that turned into the play by a team of three playwrights, and starring three stage and screen heavy-hitters: Daniel Radcliffe, Bobby Cannavale and Cherry Jones.

Radcliffe was cinema’s “Harry Potter” and has received critical praise for several star turns on Broadway, including a revival of “Equus” in 2008. Cannavale won an Emmy for television’s “Boardwalk Empire” and played Will’s partner in “Will and Grace.” Jones won Tonys for her stage roles in “The Heiress” and “Doubt,” and picked up a supporting actress Emmy for TV’s “24.”

The play focuses on the give and take between D’Agata (Cannavale) and eager young fact-checker Jim Fingal (Radcliffe) over blurring the lines between fact and fiction in a “groundbreaking” article for a major magazine.

That dichotomy grows even more intriguing since in real life, D’Agata has been the director of the University of Iowa’s Nonfiction Writing Program since 2013.

Hailing from Boston and Cape Cod, he earned an MFA from the UI’s nonfiction program in 1998, as well as an MFA in poetry from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop the same year, and began teaching at the UI in 2005.

Q: Is the book fiction or nonfiction?

A: That question is the very point of the book. It’s not 100 percent nonfiction, but neither is it fiction. And that’s exactly what the book is trying to explore — whether this genre, like other genres and other forms of art, has the right to occupy a space that isn’t at the extreme end of a spectrum of either fact or fiction. Does it have the right to an “in-betweenness,” which is to say, does it have the right to art?

Q: What was the genesis of “The Lifespan of a Fact”?

A: While Jim and I were fact-checking one of my essays for The Believer magazine back in 2003, we kept bumping into discrepancies in many of the sources that we were relying on for information. Those discrepancies — finding one set of facts from one “authority” and an different set of facts from another — are what actually inspired my essay. On its surface it’s an essay about suicide in Las Vegas, but at its core I’ve always thought of it as an essay about uncertainty, and how not all kinds of information — nor all kinds of nonfiction — are as reliable as we want to believe they are. So Jim and I were having a really interesting discussion about what counts as a fact and what counts as fiction in a work of literature. And we thought that these nerdy discussions might make an interesting book. But our correspondence was largely over email, and it was messy, because our arguments were scattered, patchy and not chronological at all. So simply reprinting our correspondence as a book would not have worked. It would have been a mess at best and illegible at worst. So in developing the book we consolidated and expanded our points, and we naturally polarized to try to help make those points clearer, more dramatic, and also just more fun to read.

Q: How much of it is autobiographical?

A: The book represents a version of ourselves as well as a version of our discussions — just like this new play represents a version of the version that appears in the book. I met the cast two weeks ago, and we were talking about the similarities between writers and actors. They spend their careers wearing masks, and so do writers — even nonfiction writers. There is a long tradition of writing behind the guise of a persona in the literary essay. These personas aren’t fictions, but neither are they nonfiction. They are versions of ourselves; they’re masks.

Q: How does a book leap from page to stage?

A: I was giving a talk about the book at a store in Manhattan and afterward a man came up to me and said he was a Hollywood producer who had recently started working on Broadway and thought that the book would make a great play. And to be honest, I was so numb at that point to the craziness that the book had attracted that I just ignored him. I think I said something like “Oh, that’s interesting.” And then moved on. But the next day he tracked down my agent, made his pitch, and I think within a month we had a contract. In fact, that producer and I became good friends. His name was Norman Twain, and he’d actually had a very successful career in Hollywood making socially conscious movies that still somehow managed to make money. I think his biggest hit was “Lean on Me” with Morgan Freeman. Unfortunately, Norm passed away two years ago this fall, so this production is a great tribute to him, because six years ago, amid all the nutty hysteria that the book attracted, he managed to see something in it that no one else did. He saw a story about how very difficult the truth can be.

Q: Why do you think this material/subject matter resonates from reader to the upper echelon of theater?

A: It’s embarrassingly prescient for today. I say “embarrassingly” because I think most of us would prefer not to be living through this period in American history, and because I would prefer not to be represented by a character who sometimes sounds like he’s quoting a tweet from the Oval Office about “fake news.” But the play really isn’t about politics. The play is concerned with facts, but facts as they have to do with literature. The book never argues that journalism should be allowed to take liberties with facts. Instead, the book explicitly states just the opposite: that there’s a big difference between journalism and literary essays, and that it’s in literature that we ought to allow writers some leeway in how they craft their stories. At its dorkiest heart, the book and the play are both about the nature of genre.

Q: The show boasts Broadway’s first all-female design team. How exciting/significant is that?

A: It’s significant — but should it be? It’s kind of embarrassing that in 2018 this is considered a monumental “first.” Shouldn’t it have happened years ago?

Q: What do you hope readers and viewers take away from experiencing your story?

A: Black-and-white absolutes are dangerous things. The certainty that they pretend to give us can make us feel comfortable and self-righteous, but that comfort always comes at someone else’s expense. My hope is that the book and the play both try to challenge the appeal of those kinds of absolutes.

“I play a fact-checker that is sent to check an article written by an author, played by Bobby [Cannavale], and this author is not used to being held to journalistic standards of accuracy,” Radcliffe told Fallon, “so I go in and make his life hell for a few days and Cherry [Jones]’ character is our editor who has to make the decision whether or not to publish the article in the end and keep us from killing each other—but it’s a comedy!
“And one thing I have to say—because it will get me to see any play—is it’s one act, straight through,” Radcliffe adds.

Radcliffe also talked about his upcoming film, Guns Akimbo, shot this past summer in New Zealand, as well as his obsession with American football (he’s in two Fantasy leagues).

Although Lifespan of a Fact has two shows on Sundays—a big day for the NFL—Radcliffe said, “the fear of screwing up keeps me concentrating.”

Radcliffe also stopped by The Today Show September 13, and had some words of advice for Al Roker, who’s poised to make his Broadway debut next month in Waitress. Check out the clip below.

Written by Jeremy Karekan, David Murrell, and Gordon Farrell, and directed by Leigh Silverman, the play is based on a real life incident and the book of the same name that followed. “The story becomes a debate about how far an artist can go…in order to get to the emotional truth,” explains Cannavale. With the first performance of Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead less than a month away, take a look at some of the action from inside the Rehearsal Room. Pictures are available in multiple sources and in our gallery.

Against the backdrop of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, this mind-bending situation comedy sees two hapless minor characters, Rosencrantz (Daniel Radcliffe) and Guildenstern (Joshua McGuire), take centre stage with David Haig as The Player. Increasingly out of their depth, the young double act stumble their way in and out of the action of this iconic drama. In a literary hall of mirrors, Stoppard’s brilliantly funny, existential labyrinth sees us witness the ultimate identity crisis.

how-to-succeed-630x310

A new series of musicals reimagined as concerts will take place later this year, starting with How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying performed at the Royal Festival Hall.

The concert will feature the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Mike Dixon, alongside an ensemble of yet to be announced performers.

Co-produced by Elliot Davis and concert promoters Senbla, the show will play for one night at the Royal Festival Hall on May 19.

Senbla managing director Ollie Rosenblatt said: “Bringing this show to the London concert stage is a great privilege. To start work on a production that has stamped itself firmly as one of the great shows in the history of musical theatre is hugely exciting, and this being one of many more musicals in concerts we will be producing we hope this will be a new form of entertainment for the public to get their teeth into”.

Davis added that the concert series “will see us honing in on the timeless classics of musical theatre and bringing them to concert in London with the best orchestras, casts and creative teams we can assemble”.

Further shows in the series have not yet been announced.

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying – which was revived on Broadway in 2011 in a production starring Daniel Radcliffe and John Larroquette – features music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and a book by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock, and Willie Gilbert.

Cripple of Inishmaan and What if
Marcie / Jul 21st, 2014

The last show for the Cripple of Inishmaan was yesterday and while a few of my friends said the last days were hectic. A lot of pictures from backstage, the stage door and whatever else may have you were splashed everywhere from facebook, to tumblr to twitter and instagram.

The anticipation from the What if Premiere in Toronto today with Daniel appearing at the premiere will be the highlight of today’s news. Yesterday we gave away tickets to two people: Shirley and Anika for them and their guest. I hope they enjoy the premiere, and have fun.

Today’s news is from MTV: Daniel Radcliffe Doesn’t Think About His ‘Harry Potter’ Co-Stars Getting Naked and a new clip from What if featured on Vulture’s website.

Thanks to a friend of mine, Erica for donating photos from the Trevor Talk Back during the Cripple of Inishmaan. Also added more from the Cripple of Inishmaan Stage Door as well.

HLN Tv Interview
Marcie / Jun 28th, 2014

While Harry Potter might be the role Daniel Radcliffe is best known for, it’s Broadway where this young actor is currently making his mark. HLN’s Jon Sarlin (@jonsarlin) caught up with Radcliffe in New York to talk about his performance in his third Broadway play, “The Cripple of Inishmaan”.

Radcliffe plays the role of Billy Claven, a crippled orphan in 1930s rural Ireland, who tries to escape the island in search of a rumored Hollywood film set nearby. Radcliffe describes Martin McDonagh, the play’s writer whose credits also include the movies “In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths,” as “one of the smartest, funniest writers around.”

The 24-year-old actor also talks about what life is like for him in New York, why he isn’t deciding between London and New York just yet and what thing New Yorkers just refuse to do that amazes him.

Frankenstein gets retitled to Victor Frankenstein
Marcie / Jun 17th, 2014

James-McAvoy Fox’s Frankenstein is now officially titled “Victor Frankenstein,” and the official synopsis has been revealed:

“James McAvoy is Victor Von Frankenstein and Daniel Radcliffe stars as Igor in a unique, never-before-seen twist on Mary Shelley’s classic 19th century novel. Told from Igor’s perspective, we see the troubled young assistant’s dark origins, his redemptive friendship with the young medical student Victor Von Frankenstein, and become eyewitnesses to the emergence of how Frankenstein became the man—and the legend—we know today.”

Directed by Paul McGuigan (Lucky Number Slevin) from a script written by Max Landis (Chronicle), Victor Frankenstein is set to be released on October 2nd, 2015.

Go Backstage with Dan
Marcie / Jun 16th, 2014

Just below, EW has exclusive video of Harry Potter Radcliffe winding (not wanding) through the corridors of the Cort Theatre. You’ll see the seaside ship that occupies much of the foreground of Act I, the country store with yards and yards of canned peas — including the oft-mentioned Fripple Frapple candies that gangly townie Bartley (Conor MacNeill) harps on through the play – and a rather large and worrisome peephole, which has gotten the cast in trouble on a few occasions. DanRad also checks in on his Tony-nominated costar Sarah Greene, who plays the fire-haired and equally fire-breathing Helen — a woman who tortures the locals, including Radcliffe’s Cripple Billy. Thankfully, Greene is much kinder in real life than her character is. Our young star even lets us into his dressing room, where we learn what former Cort tenant Ian McKellen left for him — as well as why Cripple Billy is so in love with cows.

Another Successful Stint on Broadway for Daniel Radcliffe
Marcie / Apr 23rd, 2014

COI_28829

After last year’s release of the film Kill Your Darlings, and his current role as Billy in The Cripple of Inishmaan, it’s safe to say that Dan’s acting career has managed to avoid the pitfalls associated with early fame and child stardom. Leaving the more “mainstream” parts for his contemporaries, he has actively sought roles that challenge his acting abilities as well as the public’s perception of him. Dan’s understated charm and perseverance has aided in transporting him from the wizarding world of Hogwarts to the Broadway stages of NYC, with barely a pause between.

In 2008, while still involved with the Potter franchise, Dan stepped out from underneath Harry’s shadow to play the lead role in Equus- our first opportunity to see him as a serious thespian (and without his wizard robes). Three years later, he sought the limelight on stage again, this time in New York City. Again, he was trying something very new, and this time it was testing his song-and-dance skills in the lead role of the revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

Last year, in an interview with the Denver Post, Dan said, “”In my experience the fans of Potter are an incredibly smart bunch. If you offer them challenging material — because the Potter books are challenging— if you treat an audience and fanbase with respect for their intelligence they will reward you with interest in what you’re doing.”

By taking his Potter fans with him as he explores the farther reaches of cinema and the stage, Dan has made a unique name for himself among other young actors. Dan has given his audience the opportunity to watch him take on more mature roles, diverse and unpredictable as they may be. His recent roles have undoubtedly led a new generation of young people to discover the pleasures of live theater (no surprise, since a guarantee of having Dan Radcliffe in the room may lead some to do almost anything).

In his newest role, Billy, in The Cripple of Inishmaan, Dan fleshes out the existence of a crippled youth living on the desolate Aran Islands of western Ireland. A “tragi-comedy,” the play follows Billy as he tries to change the course of his life by becoming involved in a Hollywood film set on the island. Here Dan has once again taken his fan base to previously uncharted territories, by showing American audiences his ability to display the cruelty, darkness, and very tender emotions that reside within his character. The playwright, Martin McDonagh, is an Irishman famous for capturing the dark side of life on the Emerald Isle, and while the juxtaposition between his work and that of the former boy wizard may seem striking, audiences have thus far responded very positively to Dan’s portrayal.

Departing from the stage for now, up next for Dan is a role in Frankenstein, another big-screen version of the infamous Victorian-era monster thriller, for which Dan will sport a shoulder-length hair-do. While he has admitted to having interest in eventually committing to a big film musical, talks of a Potter reunion, unfortunately, seem to still be rooted in fantasy.

Outer Critic Circle Awards & More
Marcie / Apr 22nd, 2014

New stuff for today:

Cripple of Inishmaan up for two awards Nominations for the Outer Critic Circle Awards: Outstanding Revival of a Play and Outstanding Director of a Play (Michael Grandage)

A New article from New York magazine featuring Dan in his dressing room and what he has laying around:

What’s here: “I have a pillow my mom’s friend had made which has GOOD LUCK DAN in Gaelic and the island of Inishmaan on it. Plus Ricola, Listerine, and foam massage rollers. On How to Succeed, I learned when you’re doing a show eight times a week you’ve got to take care of your body.”

Plus some gifts: “My character talks quite a bit about cows—there’s a running joke—so I’ll probably end up with a lot of stuffed cows and bells. When I did Equus, I got horses, which I don’t understand because my character had a pretty weird relationship with horses. And the artwork you get at stage door is sometimes amazing and sometimes scary. People draw my eyes massive—sometimes I think, Jesus Christ, I look like anime.”

And The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is opening at Universal Studios Japan on July 15, 2014.

More reviews are pouring in from the Cripple of Inishmaan as well as pictures. Thanks to Lou Harry for sending us his review from IBJ.com/arts

Follow your muse through the door and you can bring a lot of people with you—including people who might not otherwise have know that the rooms you entered or created even existed.

All this is to say that I have enormous admiration for Daniel Radcliffe, who could have coasted in Hollywood. Instead, though, he’s parlayed Harry Potter popularity into a string of challenging roles on Broadway and in London. Now he’s back on Broadway, lending his considerable talents—and leading his considerable fan base— to a nearly impeccable production of Martin McDonagh’s tragicomedy “The Cripple of Inishmaan.”

And, at least as far as I could tell, even those who bought tickets just to be in the room with their favorite wizard, left the theater as breathlessly blissful as I—who never saw an entire Potter film—did.

The best gossip on Broadway these days is nothing you can read in the tabloids. You’ll have to hear it in person, and believe me, you’ll want to. This is very deep dish — layered with malice and kindness, truth and conjecture, and all the mixed motives that make human beings such endlessly intriguing subjects of speculation.

The forum for this fascinating tittle-tattle is the Cort Theater, where Michael Grandage’s splendid production of Martin McDonagh’s “The Cripple of Inishmaan” opened on Sunday night. By the way — and wouldn’t you know? — there’s a movie star involved, as there often is when a Broadway show generates much talk.

But the star in question, Daniel Radcliffe, isn’t here just to flex his charisma for fans. In the title role of this glimmeringly dark comedy from 1996, Mr. Radcliffe — the boy wizard in the immensely successful “Harry Potter” movie franchise — is entirely convincing as the boy who is regarded as least likely to succeed at pretty much anything in his God-forsaken rural Irish town.

Dan returning to Broadway in Cripple of Inishmaan
Marcie / Jan 16th, 2014

The Cripple of Inishmaan tells the story of a young handicapped boy from a small community off the coast of Ireland who dreams of Hollywood when a film crew arrives to make a documentary about a neighboring island. The cast includes Ingrid Craigie, Padraic Delaney, Sarah Greene, Gillian Hanna, Gary Lilburn, Conor MacNeill, Pat Shortt and June Watson.

The new production will run from April 12 (Preview Night) through July 20, with opening night scheduled for April 20 (just in time to make the cut-off for Tony Award nomination eligibility on April 24). In an interesting bit of ticketing news, the production will make 10,000 tickets available for $27 during the limited run.

The Cripple of Inishmaan, starring Radcliffe in the title role, is coming to Broadway’s Cort Theatre with the entire London cast.

Daniel Radcliffe made his West End debut in 2007 and Broadway debut in 2008-2009 in Peter Shaffer’s Equus. He returned to Broadway in 2011 for a 10-month sold out run in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Since completing the final installment in the series of eight Harry Potter films in 2010, Radcliffe has continued to prove himself a diverse and acclaimed talent. He stars in Sony Pictures Classics’, Kill Your Darlings, which, having premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, opened to rave reviews. He will next be seen starring opposite Zoe Kazan in CBS Films and eOne’s romantic comedy, The F Word, as well as starring opposite Juno Temple in the horror-thriller Horns, which is based on Joe Hill’s best-selling book. All three films were invited to screen at the recent Toronto International Film Festival. He is currently shooting Frankenstein with James McAvoy for Twentieth Century Fox. In 2012, Radcliffe starred in Hammer’s The Woman in Black, which has since become the most successful British horror film of all time, in addition to its box office success in the US. Last summer, in addition to starring in The Cripple of Inishmaan in the West End, he filmed the second series of Sky Art’s A Young Doctor’s Notebook, again opposite Jon Hamm (broadcast on Ovation in the US).

Dan’s just the man for Grandage
Marcie / Jun 13th, 2013

A throng of fans wait for Daniel Radcliffe at the stage door of the Noel Coward Theatre, hoping to snatch a quick photo of him or get an autograph.

They’ve been watching him and his cast mates in Martin McDonagh’s merciless black comedy The Cripple Of Inishmaan, a show full of bellyaches and heartache.

I found it funnier than when I first saw it 17 years ago.

It’s the third play in the inaugural season of the Michael Grandage Company, set up by Grandage (the former Donmar Theatre artistic director) and executive producer James Bierman.

The season started with Privates On Parade, followed by Peter And Alice. After Inishmaan comes A Midsummer Night’s Dream in September, and Henry V in November — starring Jude Law.

Director Grandage is thrilled with Radcliffe, and when I mentioned Sarah Greene (pictured with Daniel) — who plays the acerbic egg-breaker Helen — he went all giddy.

‘She’s going to be an absolute white hot talent!’ he exclaimed.

He’s right, too; but the entire company works beautifully.

Grandage and Bierman are pleased they have established a youth company, training posts for up-and-coming directors and designers, plus free shows for schools from disadvantaged areas.

The biggest hit, though, was the release of 100,000 tickets for £10 each, many of them snapped up by first-time theatre-goers.

‘Harry Potter’ star Daniel Radcliffe stars in ‘The Cripple of Inishmaan’ before Grandage rounds off his run with two Shakespeare classics: ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, with David Walliams as Bottom and Sheridan Smith as Titania, and ‘Henry V’, with Jude Law in the title role.

Other Shakespeare productions in 2013 include ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ at the Old Vic, starring James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave, and ‘Othello’ at the National Theatre, with Adrian Lester in the lead. Inspired by Macbeth, Alfred Jarry’s excoriating ‘Ubi Roi’ comes to the Barbican, while Antony Sher – famous for his villainous portrayal of Richard III back in the 80s – takes on the role of a minor German dictator in ‘The Captain of Kopenick’.

Several reports (including The New York Times) outline an accident or medical emergency that occured backstage. The incident has been classified by some as a serious injury – however, the emphasis on these early reports should be on the fact that they’re unsubstantiated as of yet.

A statement is expected shortly from the production, and more information will be posted as soon as it becomes available.
