EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK: How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
marcie - Mar 9, 2011 Dan News

Call it Black Swan-lite: Daniel Radcliffe spent the last year taking 17 hours of voice and dance lessons a week in order to shake his moneymaker as corporate ladder-climber J. Pierrepont Finch in the upcoming musical comedy revival How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, which opens on Broadway March 27. But though his character may be as ambitious as Natalie Portman’s — in a matter of weeks, he goes from window washer to ad exec — his tale is much more fun and games, or, should we say, song and dance: “Finch is a symbol of drive without any kind of maliciousness,” says Radcliffe. “There’s an innocence to him, which is quite endearing. You forgive a lot of his actions that would otherwise be considered quite manipulative and unpleasant.”

Now Just a Muggle, With Song and Dance
marcie - Mar 2, 2011 Dan News

THE most famous 21-year-old on the planet came barreling into a West Village diner one wintry February morning, desperately craving Belgian waffles. He was bleary eyed, scruffy and stubbly but energetic despite the early hour, and slightly winded after rushing from the previous restaurant chosen for him, which was closed because of a gas leak.

Slipping unnoticed into a backup location that presented no imminent threat of explosion, he winkingly acknowledged his morning’s travails — “You were trying to kill me, weren’t you?” he said through a smile — and before tearing into the breakfast that would power him through that day’s rehearsals for his new Broadway musical, offered the following warning:

“You will see me probably drink an obscene amount of maple syrup. I’ve never had maple syrup before about three weeks ago, and now I could freebase it. Pints of it.”

Movie Bosses Pay Fortune To Free Daniel Radcliffe For Harry Potter Promos
marcie - Mar 2, 2011 Dan News

Bosses at Warner Bros. have reportedly paid out half a million dollars to ensure Daniel Radcliffe is free to promote the final Harry Potter movie later this year (11).

The second installment of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is due to open in London in July (11), but the film’s star Radcliffe is signed up to appear in this year’s revival of Broadway play How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

It means the actor might not have been available to fulfil promotion duties for the closing chapter in the wizard franchise – so Warners chiefs have reportedly stitched up a deal to “buy” the Hirschfeld Theatre, where the play is staged, for up to five nights to keep Radcliffe free.

A source tells New York Post gossip column Page Six, “This is the final film, so it’s a big deal. A grand world premiere is being planned as well as a U.S. premiere and a press tour. They absolutely couldn’t do it without their big star. But the theatre producers dug their heels in and said they wouldn’t release Radcliffe unless Warner bought out the entire theater for the nights they need him.

“Studio bosses are furious, but they have no choice but to pay up for five nights costing over $500,000.”

A spokesman for Radcliffe tells the publication, “Everything is fine, Dan is promoting the film and is happy to do so. With all productions there are scheduling issues but everything has all been worked out. Warner Bros. is very supportive of Dan, and there is no issue.”

Daniel Radcliffe and Rob Ashford Debut Director’s Cut Series
marcie - Feb 24, 2011 Dan News

As director-choreographer Rob Ashford readies the 50th Anniversary revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying for Broadway’s Al Hirschfeld Theatre, he sits down with the show’s leading man Daniel Radcliffe for an in-depth conversation about theatre, film and all points in between. Part One in a three-part series.

Daniel Radcliffe Sings & Dances on Broadway!
marcie - Feb 24, 2011 Dan News

Jon Hamm, move over. The latest looker to leap back into the 1960s: Daniel Radcliffe, who is assuming the musical role of quintessential company man J. Pierrepont Finch in the new Broadway revival of the 1961 classic How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

As shown in these exclusive-to-PEOPLE rehearsal shots, Radcliffe is already off and running ahead of the chorus. As Finch, he starts in the mailroom of Manhattan’s World Wide Wicket and works his way up the corporate ladder.

En route, he meets the adoring secretary Rosemary Pilkington – played by Philadelphia-born Rose Hemingway, in her Broadway debut after touring nationally in Mamma Mia. She’s also appeared in Donmar Warehouse’s U.S. production of Parade at Los Angeles’s Mark Taper Forum.

In the production, which marks Radcliffe’s return to the Great White Way for the first time since starring in a 2008 revival of Equus – Anderson Cooper narrates Finch’s meteoric rise … and fall.

“Anderson Cooper just always stood out for me,” the Harry Potter star, 21, says on the How to Succeed Web site about the CNN anchor. “He always had this kind of really cool … playful glint behind his eye, I think, which I always found quite funny.”

Also in the cast: John Larroquette, as J.B. Biggley, the boss of the World Wide Wicket Company, who admires Finch’s fortitude. Previews begin Feb. 26 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, with the opening night set for March 27.

Coincidentally, Radcliffe’s role made a star of Robert Morse when he originated J. Pierrepont Finch in the original How to … 50 years ago (and in the 1967 movie) – and, today, Morse, 79, memorably stars on Mad Men, as the advertising company’s founder, Bertram Cooper.
