Like every child star Daniel Radcliffe has had to get used to his fame and over the last ten years he has amassed a celebrity that rivals any other actor in the world. The success of the Harry Potter movies is astounding, leaving almost no part of the globe untouched by the magical tale. And as the films come to an end the young star is moving away from the wizard character, venturing into new unchartered territory and making a name for himself all over again. With the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 DVD due to be released soon fans of Radcliffe and the movies prepare to say goodbye to one of the most loved characters of all time.
Daniel ventured into acting at the tender age of ten in the television movie David Copperfield in 1999. Soon after in 2001 he starred in The Tailor of Panama, an American adaption of a John le Carré novel by the same name. Casting agents who had seen performance in David Copperfield believed that he was the perfect person to play Harry Potter. Radcliffe’s parents were, at first, reluctant about letting their son star in the film as it was set to be filmed in the United States. However, after several auditions Radcliffe was offered the part, which in the end was set to be filmed in the United Kingdom.
As well as starring in the Harry Potter movies Radcliffe has appeared in several other productions and movies. In 2007, he appeared in December Boys, an Australian family drama about four orphans, the film was adapted from a novel of the same name by Michael Noonan. Also in 2007, Radcliffe starred in My Boy Jack, a television drama film about Remembrance Day.
At the tender age of 17 Daniel turned away from his young image and performed onstage in Peter Shaffer’s play Equus. Radcliffe took on the lead role as Alan Strang, a stable boy who has an obsession with horses. The play won several awards and toured to America.
Radcliffe has a film out early next year called The Woman in Black. Radcliffe has said that he will not attend university and that he hopes to concentrate on writing and acting. We wait with baited breath for his next performance, whether in a horror film or an onstage production. One thing is for sure, the world has not seen the last of Daniel Radcliffe.
